Technical Note: Minimal Access Surgery for Cochlear Implantation with MED-EL Devices

2005

Background: Minimally invasive techniques have been described for cochlear implant surgery, but so far this had not been the case for Med-EL devices. Objective: To describe a newly developed minimal access approach for the implantation of Med-EL devices and report our results after up to 1 year of follow-up in 52 patients. Discussion: The use of a minimally invasive approach without raising a flap or extensive drilling of a bony well was feasible in all 52 patients of this series. It shortened the surgical time to an average of 45 min and there were no specific postoperative complications. The average follow-up of 8.4 months was uneve…

Influence of the scalp thickness on the intracranial contribution to rheoencephalography

2004

In spite of the great efforts made by the scientific community, up to now there is no agreement about the rheoencephalography (REG) capability to reflect cerebral blood flow (CBF). Moreover, a standard procedure and the optimal electrode arrangement have not been established yet. In a previous study, we found, using a classical four-shell spherical model of the head and solving it by numerical methods that, theoretically, there could exist an electrode arrangement to register an REG II free of extracranial contribution. In this paper, we have studied the influence of scalp thickness on the intracranial contribution to REG II. The study has been performed by solving the head model, using in …

Rate of false-negative findings in sentinel lymph node biopsy in patients with head and neck malignant melanoma.

2017

e17566 Background: Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy (SLNB) is the standard procedure for malignant melanoma with a thicknes above 1mm. However, the benefits of this procedure have recently been questioned because of a high number of false negative findings. The aim of our study was to investigate the number of early recurrence in patients with negative SLNB. Methods: All patients with malignant melanoma of the head and neck region who underwent SLNB between 2010 and 2016 in our department were included and data reviewed retrospectively. Recurrence in the same cervical lymph node region of the previously extirpated sentinel lymph node (SLN) within one year was defined as primary false-negative. R…

Inhibitoren der Korrosion 24 (1) - Zur Vergleichbarkeit der Abhängigkeit der Korrosion und Korrosionsinhibierung von der Chloridionen- und Inhibitork…

1979

Stochastic linearization critically re-examined

1997

Abstract The stochastic linearization technique, widely used for the analysis of nonlinear dynamic systems subjected to random excitations, is revisited. It is shown that the standard procedure universally adopted for determining the so-called effective stiffness of the equivalent linear system is erroneous in all previous publications. Two error-free stochastic linearization techniques are elucidated, namely those based on (1) the force linearization and (2) energy linearization.

Hydrophilic primer has double the risk of bracket bond failure

2002

Question: In patients who need orthodontic bracketing is a hydrophilic primer or a conventional primer more effective for bonding? Objective To compare clinical failure rates of brackets bonded with a prototype hydrophilic primer and conventional primer. Design Randomised controlled trial (RCT) in a hospital setting. Intervention A split mouth design was used. Sides were randomly allocated to either hydrophilic (supplied by 3M Unitek (Monrovia, California, USA) or conventional primer (conventional TransbondTM 3M Unitek) adhesive), with the other side having alternative primer. Brackets were applied to 33 patients using a standard procedure. A total of 266 bonds were completed with each prim…

Dual-task conditions on static postural control in older adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis

2021

Dual-task (DT) consists of the performance of two tasks simultaneously. An index of DT difficulty has been linked to decreased postural control. Because a wide range of DT is employed, this study aimed to evaluate its effects in static balance in older adults. PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus were screened, and the secondary tasks were grouped as manual, reaction time, discrimination and decision making, mental tracking, verbal fluency, working memory, or “other” tasks. A total of 66 studies have been included. The meta-analysis was conducted on 28 effects and showed a significant mean effect size of d = 0.24 (p = .02, SE = 0.10; confidence interval [0.04, 0.44]), indicating a worsening i…

Roman lava quarries in the Eifel region (Germany): geochemical data for millstone provenance studies

2009

Roman millstones of assumed Eifel origin were produced and exported in huge quantities to many parts of Roman Europe and can be used as tracers for trade patterns in Roman times. This study presents for the first time a raw-material centred geochemical definition of the 13 well-known Roman basaltic lava quarries in the Quaternary East and West Eifel volcanic fields. The aim is to find a way to characterize the individual exploitation sites precisely by means of their geochemical composition and to recommend a standard procedure for further millstone provenance analysis. Based on major and trace element composition analyses by XRF, a differentiation of each quarry is achieved by using a comb…

Unveiling the boost in the sandwich priming technique.

2021

The masked priming technique (which compares #####-house-HOUSE vs. #####-fight-HOUSE) is the gold-standard tool to examine the initial moments of word processing. Lupker and Davis showed that adding a pre-prime identical to the target produced greater priming effects in the sandwich technique (which compares #####-HOUSE-house-HOUSE vs #####-HOUSE-fight-HOUSE). While there is consensus that the sandwich technique magnifies the size of priming effects relative to the standard procedure, the mechanisms underlying this boost are not well understood (i.e., does it reflect quantitative or qualitative changes?). To fully characterise the sandwich technique, we compared the sandwich and standard t…

Anestesisykepleieres metoder for å kontrollere cufftrykk – en observasjonsstudie

2021
